Bahia Honda Key

BAHIA HONDA KEY begins at mile marker 37 and is just north of Big Pine Key. The island is virtually undeveloped, but it is the home of the beautiful Bahia Honda State Park.

The Bahia Honda bridge, pictured at left, was originally built for Flagler's Railroad. After the railroad was destroyed in the 1935 Hurricane, it was converted to use for automobiles and other vehicles. The new road had to be built on top of the original structure because the area where the railroad track ran was not wide enough for two lanes of traffic. The bridge is no longer in use.

Henry Flagler's railroad to Key West turned the remote island of Bahia Honda Key into a tropical destination. Today, the island is home to one of Florida's southernmost state parks, known for beautiful beaches, magnificent sunsets, and excellent snorkeling. Visitors can picnic on the beach and take a swim, or simply relax and enjoy the balmy sea breezes that caress the shores year-round. Anglers can fish from shore or bring a boat and launch at the boat ramp.

Bahia Honda with the perfect beach

There is not much written about Bahia Honda, because it is not a large Key Island with a lot of tourist attraction. We call it the most beautiful in Florida and if you are planning a trip it should be on your list of places to visit. Most of the time visitors come for the beach … the crystal clear water and a picknick on the beach. However be aware that you have to bring your own cooler, drinks and snacks, because at Bahia Honda it is nature pure and there is nothing to buy.

The island itself is made of Key Largo limestone, derived from a coral reef similar to the present day reefs of the Keys. Bahia Honda is the southernmost key where this formation exist. If you are a beach lover and have a thing for flowers, mother nature has done its best to decorate the shore with many complex biological communities. If you hunt through Bahia Honda you can see subtropical flowers. I recommend comming in spring for nature and the beach.

The park is home to a multiple palm trees, key spider and tiger lily, sea lavender, bay cedar, gumbo-limbo and satinwood. All these plants throughout the keys have been carried from island to island by birds, ocean waves brought it to shore or a hurricane has carried it from the West Indies.

The historical treasure is a stated earlier the Bahia Honda Bridge, take your camera with you the old bridge is one of the most photographed structures in the Keys. As a visitor or if you have vacation or are a tourist we hope this little guide has helped you. Key West in the Carrabean

LouLouPhotos welcomes you to the Florida Keys. Key West is more than a night at the famous Duval Street. If you think that the Florida Keys are made up by the bars in the Duval Street you have missed the secret of Key West. This is a city that has establish its own republic called "Conch Republic" and is celebrating it's independence every year. Off course it is more for tourists than for real.

So what are the things to do in Key West. If you are planning a vacation then we recommend that you plan to relax; the beauty is to get with the beat of Key West. So plan a evening on the beach during sun-set.

What should be on your list of places to o things to do is,

Hemingway and his old mansion. This was the home of renowned American author and Nobel Prize winner, Ernest Hemingway. Visit his mansion and the gardens, see the house where he wrote most of his works. Ernest loved cats and they are still arround, the old mansion, Ernest Hemingway Museum, is the home for fifthy to sixty cats.

Visit Dry Tortugas, I can not help it, but if I think on Dry Tortugas I always think on Pirates. This island even further south of Key West is a must see. If you are on the island you may think on Captain Black or the Pirates of the Carribean or Treasure hunting. Anyway you should visit this place.

Truman White House, even presidents loved Key West, thats why it is called Little White House. From Mallory Square, walk southward on Front Street just past the Hilton property and onto the grounds of the Little White House of Harry S. Truman. Kennedy had Hyannis Port, Nixon went to Key Biscayne, LBJ had his ranch, as did George W. Bush. His dad went to Kennebunkport and Reagan did a ranch in California. And, Harry S. Truman loved Key West. Today, you can tour the house and grounds...In the history of the litle White House many famous stayed there. Thomas Edison resided in the house, Dwight Eisenhower spent time here to recover from a heart attack. John Kennedy, met the British Prime Minister Harold McMillian at the Little White House. And Colin Powell hosted a week of international peace talks at the house.

Southernmost Point and Southermost Mansion, Key West Go down to the "southernmost point in the USA" marker and have your photo taken, 90 miles to Cuba. Think about it Cuba is closer than Miami.

We invite you to use our photos to plan and visualize every aspect of your dream vacation to the Florida Keys. Visit our Key West Gallery.

The Apache Trail, Arizona

The Apache Trail, or AZ 88 as it is officially known, links Apache Junction at the edge of the Greater Phoenix area with Globe via Theodore Roosevelt Lake, through the Superstition Mountains and the Tonto National Forest; 40 miles of steep, winding and mostly unpaved road past magnificent scenery of twisted igneous mountains with dense forests of saguaro and ferocactus, and several deep blue lakes. Past the lakes, the trail continues in more traditional fashion to the former copper mining town of Globe, but it is the western half which is the most scenic and well-known.
